The Onggi (Korean traditional pottery) Expo Ulsan Korea 2009 took place from Oct 9 to Nov 8, 2009 in Ulsan, Korea to promote international earthenware cultures and strengthen cultural exchanges among countries.
With the theme “Onggi – Mirror of future”, the international art festival will examine the past and present of Onggi, and to reshape the value of Onggi for the future.
The Expo is organized by Ulsan World Earthenware Culture Exposition Foundation and supported by the Korean government and Ulsan city. The Onggi Village in Ulsan, the largest Onggi distributing village in Korea has hosted the Onggi festival since 2000.
As a festival for developing and diffusing the traditional Korean Onggi culture, the Expo has attracted reputed ceramists and artists who are willing to promote and foster world ceramic cultures through a variety of exchange programs.
Onggi is a traditional vessel which made of nature clay and ash glaze, which broadly used in Korean daily life for a variety of purposes, but primarily for the storage of pickled vegetables, bean pastes and soy sauces. It was selected as one of the 100 symbols of Korean culture by the Korean government in 2006.
