Mongolia Economic Forum Held on 8-9 February 2010

Mongolia successfully held its Inaugural Economic Forum in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from 8 to 9 February 2010. 

  


The forum was organized with the support and participation of President Tsahiagiin Elbegdorj and Prime Minister Sukhbaatar Batbold of Mongolia. Key government agencies, international organizations, business leaders and the media attended the Forum. The objective of this Forum was to provide an open dialogue on a broad range of topics including the development of the mining and capital markets, competitiveness, business registration system, development of the environment and green-tech, and reform of the state budget.

Headed by Mr. James Zimmerman, the  Co-Chair of GTI Business Advisory Council, the BAC delegation to this Forum included companies representing a broad range of industry sectors including mining equipment, aviation and construction related equipment,  agricultural equipment, minerals and mining exploration and extraction, publication and consulting services, and legal and professional services.  BAC delegation members had the opportunity to meet one-on-one with key government agency representatives and members of the Mongolia business community. A key objective met by the delegation was to build the ties and bridges with decision makers in the Mongolia government and business community.

Mr. James Zimmerman, stated that “members of the BAC have the opportunity to use the GTI platform to enhance their ties and relationships in the GTI countries.” The BAC is a coalition of enterprises and business associations that support the mission of GTI including multinationals, SMEs, and trade associations from within and outside the GTI region. Several BAC delegation members to the Mongolia Economic Forum reported that their attendance at the Forum resulted in the identification and execution of key commercial opportunities for their respective companies.

The BAC leadership in Mongolia that supported and hosted the delegation included Mr. Ganhuyag Ch. Hutagt, CEO of XacBank and TerGer Financial Group. Mr. Hutagt played a key role in planning the Forum, acted as the moderator for many of the programs, and hosted a reception attended by Mongolia’s President, Prime Minister, and other key government officials. Mongolia-based BAC member, Dr. Janchiv Oyungerel, Chairwoman of Petrovis LLC, was also a participant in the panel discussions.

The Greater Tumen Initiative (GTI) is an intergovernmental coopearation mechanism in Northeast Asia, with the membership of four countries: China,  Mongolia, the Republic of Korea and the Russian Federation. It is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The GTI provides a unique platform for the member countries to identify and implement regional initiatives that encourage economic growth, improve living standards and contribute to peace and stability in Northeast Asia.
